- Often, Medical First Responders are the first physical contact for a person in our community when requesting medical attention
- MFR’s are certified in Advanced First Aid, CPR and defibrillator skills
- MFR’s are trained by Canadian Red Cross or Saint John Ambulance instructors
- Monthly in-house practice and training is provided and periodic refresher seminars are presented by EHS
- MFR’s are dispatched by the EHS Ambulance Dispatch centre upon the request of responding EHS paramedics or from the information the caller provides. There are certain types of calls that MFR’s will not be called to, based on certain criteria
- All MFR’s are registered by EHS, which ensures regular re-registration with mandatory competency training
- EHS covers part of the cost of initial MFR training and replaces all consumable items used on patients (IE. breathing masks, bandages, dressings, Oxygen)
- Several members of the BFES choose to be MFR’s but not certified fire fighters; this is very acceptable and new MFR-only members are welcome to join.
- Approximately 47% of all 2018 BFES emergency calls were medical incidents
- Patient confidentiality is assured throughout the MFR/Paramedic/EHS process
